Since Claude Bernard first observed the presence of hyperglycemia in hemorrhagic shock, the metabolic effects of shock and trauma have been extensively studied. In the past, most investigations have been principally concerned with concentration changes of various plasma and tissue constituents in the anesthetized dog subjected to rapid hemorrhage and subsequent reinfusion of the shed blood (19). Usually, these changes represent late effects which may have particular relevance to terminal physiologic mechanisms.
