Thyroid Function after Injury
The participation of the thyroid gland and its hormonal products, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in the response of the body to major injury has long been the subject of research and speculation. Hanbury (1959), summarizing the available data at that time, stated that any general conclusions as to the function of the thyroid in the postoperative state would be tenuously drawn from the work reviewed. Since then investigation of thyroid physiology has proved a fertile field of research and there has been much progress in the development of techniques for measuring free thyroid hormones, the understanding of thyroid hormone transport mechanisms and the introduction of sensitive immunoassays for detecting thyrotrophic hormone.
