Characterization of Pre-Kallikrein Activity in Developing Transplanted Mammalian Tumors

Mechanisms by which tumor vasculature develops and is maintained are under stood only limitedly. Factors affecting tumor vascular space and the regulation of blood flow through tumors have been described recently (1). The sequential development of the tumor vasculature also has been studied extensively (2, 3), and the subject of a recent review (4). Sarcomas transplanted into Algire chambers develop an exceedingly rich vascular pattern with capillary proliferation beginning three days post-transplant. These newly-formed vessels are of wide diameter with many arterial-venous anastamoses, resulting in reduced tumor blood flow.
