Surface Stress Measurement with the Mössbauer Effect

Abstract

Stress affects the Mössbauer spectrum of iron in subtle ways. Early experiments1 at 2 and 3 Kilobars compression showed that the isomer shift in ferrite at room temperature is -4.6 × 10-5mm/s/ksi. This is small compared with the linewidth of O.2 to 0.3mm/s. It was already known from NMR experiments2 that the magnetic field at the iron nuclei changed with pressure, the relative change being -1.15 × 10-5/ksi at room temperature, and this has been verified by Mössbauer measurements.3,4 These later measurements stressed iron to beyond 130 Kilobars, in compression, and for good reason. Iron fails in tension at about 100 ksi, or 6.8 Kilobars.
