Relation of Properties of Refractories to BOF use

Use of a single brick type for the initial complete lining permits determination of the wear pattern of a BOF furnace. Improvements in refractories must be made to obtain balanced wear by increasing lining thickness in the critical areas, or when maximum permissible thickness from a design standpoint is used, by upgrading brick quality. The essential criteria for evaluation of brick quality have been established, and are now being used to produce superior brick. For almost two years, 200-ton BOF units thus equipped have averaged over 1000 heats per lining.
