Characterization of Medieval Window Glass by Neutron Activation Analysis
Recent research by a growing number of workers is demonstrating that neutron activation analysis can provide valuable assistance in establishing the provenance of potsherds; coins and other metal artifacts; obsidian; amber; and paintings.(l) One of the authors of this paper has been involved for some years in analytical studies of ancient glass which have included the earliest application of neutron activation with high resolution gamma ray spectroscopy, i.e., Ge(Li) detector counting, to the investigation of archeological artifacts. The study described in this paper was undertaken to determine whether this method could be of similar usefulness in the characterization of medieval window glass. Areas of practical interest include questions of which panes are original and which replacements and the precise provenance of specific windows.
