Summary

Pipemidic acid is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, effective principally against Gram-negative organisms, Proteus included. It is bactericidal by inhibition of DNA synthesis. It has a protective effect in experimental infections with E.coli and Ps. aeruginosa and is effective for the treatment of urinary tract infections in man. Its toxicity is low (LD 50 for mice = 5–6 g/Kg) and it is practically free of any side-effect in man. After oral administration, it is excreted mostly through the kidneys, and it reaches high levels in urine. The average recommended dosage is 400 mg twice a day.
