Abstract

During the sixties, Staphylococcus undoubtedly held the role of “captain of men of death”, as it was defined in a 1956 New England Journal of Medicine editorial. Examining the worldwide medical literature of the seventies, it can be considered that at present its place has been taken by Schizomycetes having low potential virulence, with the front line occupied by Gram-negative germs, among them the microorganisms of the normal intestinal flora or of other regions (respiratory, urogenital, etc.)
