Abstract

In the late 19th century, the problem of burn infection had already been recognized and a local topical treatment was started during the time of LISTER, however, it was only at the beginning of the second world war that it first became possible to drastically reduce the mortality rate during the first 48 hours by means of infusion therapy; this did not influence the overall mortality as significantly as expected, owing to the fact that many patients died as a result of septicaemia at a later date.
