Quasi-Molecular Approach to the Theory of Ion-Atom Collisions

  • J. S. Briggs

The usefulness of recent calculations of the Hartree-Fock potential energy, electronic wavefunctions and orbital energies of a diatomic ion-atom collision pair in the description of elastic scattering and the excitation and radiative de-excitation of inner-shells is described. Good agreement with experimental data on K-shell vacancy production and x-ray emission indicates that the molecular promotion model of Fano and Lichten can be put on a quantitative basis.
