Mechanical and Physical Properties of Several Advanced Metal-Matrix Composite Materials

The objective of this investigation was to determine some of the mechanical and physical properties of several advanced metal-matrix composite materials at room, cryogenic, and elevated temperatures. Composite materials tested were of various combinations of boron, aluminum, and stainless steel. Mechanical property tests included longitudinal and transverse tensile, longitudinal compression, short-beam interlaminar shear, and pin bearing. Tests were performed at room temperature and at 77, 200, and 450 K. Physical property tests consisted of thermal expansion and specific heat measurements made from 77 to 644 K.
