Abstract

To prevent cavitation and overspeeding of the Centaur space vehicle engine turbo-pumps, the pump internals and casings must be refrigerated to cryogenic temperatures prior to introduction of the liquid-hydrogen propellant. Originally, liquid hydrogen was bled from the vehicle fuel tank through the turbopumps until conditions were adequate for engine ignition. This procedure was to be accomplished in flight after booster separation and required 20 to 30 sec.
