Evaluation of Stainless Steel Casting Alloys for Cryogenic Service in the 80-Inch Liquid-Hydrogen Bubble Chamber

The Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 80-in. liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber is a cryogenic device used for high-energy physics research. The size and shape of this chamber were determined by considerations of its use as a detector for high-energy particles generated by the Brookhaven alternating-gradient synchrotron. The need was for a large enough volume of liquid hydrogen to be placed in a 20 kG magnetic field to provide sufficient accuracy in momentum measurements of particles at energies available from this accelerator.
