Part of the Advances in Cryogenic Engineering book series (ACRE, volume 1)

As noted in the previous paper by F. G. Brickwedde, the NBS-AEC Cryogenic Engineering Laboratory (CEL) was established to provide engineering data on the properties of materials of construction, to fill a demand for much larger quantities of liquid hydrogen than had hitherto been available, and to develop improved processes and equipment for low temperature technology. The National Bureau of Standards, because of more than 30 years experience in cryogenic research, was requested by the Atomic Energy Commission to undertake the basic design of the laboratories and liquefier s and to supervise building construction and installation of equipment.
