Abstract

The NBS-AEC Cryogenic Laboratory had its beginning in an idea of Dr. Edward F. Hammel, head of the Cryogenic Laboratory of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, Dr. Hammel visioned an expanding use of very low temperatures and low temperature refrigerants in the Atomic Energy Commission, for rockets, for separations of gases by distillation, and for sundry engineering uses in various branches and agencies of our government. Dr. Hammel saw the advantages of concentrating in a single large laboratory the government’s know-how and facilities in this field.
