Acetylcholine Mediated Axon-Schwann Cell Relationships in the Squid Nerve Fiber

Abstract

Previous studies on the functional organization of the giant nerve fiber of the squid (18, 19, 25,26) have shown that, because of the unusual thickness of its Schwann cells, the giant nerve fiber of the tropical squid Sepioteuthis sepioidea is suitable for exploring the relationships between the axon and its satellite Schwann cells. Thus, simultaneous intracellular recordings of the axon and Schwann cell electrical potentials of these nerve fibers (19, 26) revealed that, whereas the propagation of a single nerve impulse by the axon has little effect on the Schwann cell electrical potential, the conduction of nerve impulse trains is followed by a prolonged hyperpolarization of the Schwann cells (19). Since then, our work has been oriented towards the elucidation of the mechanism responsible for these prolonged hyperpolarizing responses of Schwann cells to axon excitation.
