Some Methodological Considerations in the Study of Abnormal Conditions

This chapter deals with two aspects of concern in the study of abnormal populations: (1) sample definition and selection, and (2) the assessment of outcome following intervention. The issues discussed are broader than those contained in most of the other chapters which tend to be more substantive in nature. Rather, procedural considerations and research strategy relevant to the study and evaluation of intervention outcomes with abnormal developmental conditions are examined. The focus is primarily on studies with humans, although many of the points made are equally applicable to the study of infrahuman organisms. While I have chosen the childhood malnutrition syndrome discussed by Richardson as my primary example, the comments apply equally to other developmental disorders described in this volume.
