Chemoreception and Selection of Oviposition Sites by Phytophagous Insects

Abstract

In most phytophagous insects, the host range of the species is determined by the adults, which select the host as the appropriate site for egg laying. In some insects the eggs are laid quite far from the host, for example, in the case of locusts, even in the ground, in which case the larvae have to make the host selection. Even when eggs are laid on the host, larvae often select a certain organ or tissue of the host plant for feeding.
