Neuroendocrine and Neuroanatomic Correlates of Atypical Sexuality

Abstract

The presence within the same patient of both a demonstrable brain abnormality and unusual sexual behavior is provocative and tempts one to causally relate the two. For example, there have been several case reports of persons with brain tumors, usually temporal lobe in location in association with transvestism or other fetishism. Unquestionably, space occupying lesions can cause personality change as can dysrhythmias of neuronal discharge. Furthermore, from animal experimentation, it is clear that there are discrete areas within the brain responsible for some aspects of sexual behavior. Thus it is possible that in humans a lesion could, if properly located, have an effect on sexual behavior. However, magnitude of sexuality (hyper- and hyposexuality) would be the responses predicted. The occasional emergence of atypical sexual behavior, atypical in the direction of sexuality is of especial interest. Such occurrences have been viewed as evidence for disordered brain physiology, rather than psychodynamic factors, as being responsible for atypical sexuality.
