Relationships between Stress and Brain 5-Hydroxytryptamine and Their Possible Significance in Affective Disorders
The work I will describe was prompted by the hope of eventually developing an animal model relevant to depressive illness. It is a truism that any animal model of a human affective disturbance suffers from a limitation imposed by the relative inability of animals to communicate with us, and this is compounded by our own tendency to anthropomorphize. Such limitations do not apply to the partial and less ambitious models in which biochemical abnormalities reported in the disturbance are simulated in animals. Here, however, the questions arise whether these abnormalities in man are in any way responsible for the disturbed mood or behavior, and whether the way in which the biochemical model is generated in the animal has etiological relevance.
