Surface Immunoglobulins on Lymphoid Cells

The initiation of an immune response requires the direct interaction of the specific antigen with a lymphocyte. In some immune responses, macrophages play an obligatory role in handling the antigen; in others, this appears not to be necessary (Diener et al., 1970). Selectional theories of immunity (Burnet, 1959) hold that the recognition of antigen is inherent in the responding lymphocyte and that this recognition unit shows the same specificity to antigen as that of the antibody to be produced. The simplest view of this antigen-specific receptor would be that it is in fact the same type of complete antibody molecule as will be eventually secreted by that cell.
