Outline of Precambrian Chronology in Lands Bordering the South Atlantic, Exclusive of Brazil

Abstract

Radiometric age dating has consolidated much of the information resulting from independent geologic mapping of the basement complexes in African and South American countries. In this review we have attempted to interpret the age data available, and to allow for the resetting of mineral ages, as well as adding some unpublished measurements to the widely scattered information in the literature. The purpose of the review is also to provide a view of the Precambrian structural and age provinces along the edges of the continents that were contiguous prior to the breakup in the mid-Phanerozoic, so that the continuity of the ancient nuclei, basins, and transecting belts can be observed. The Brazilian part of the assemblage is described in Chap. 11.
