Trends in the Development of Bearing and Friction Materials on the Basis of Iron—Graphite—Pores

The iron—graphite system as exemplified by gray cast iron is a commonly used material for one element of both bearings and piston rings, and brake shoes of railroad wheels. In these applications, the main requirements are wear resistance and the stability of the desired coefficient of friction. These requirements are so important that other properties, such as mechanical strength, must be regarded as secondary.
