Abstract

The genus Gossypium is comprised of about 35 diploid (n = 13) and tetraploid (n = 26) species which occur as elements of the native flora, or as cultigens, throughout the tropics and subtropics. The tetraploid taxa, two of which are cultivated, are the result of hybridization of two diploid species and subsequent amphidiploidy; indeed, the New World tetraploid cottons, with Nicotiana tabacum and Triticum aestivum , are classic examples of crop plant evolution through hybridization and natural amphidiploidy.
