New Developments in Level Crossing Spectroscopy

Abstract

The level crossing method permits to measure small energy splittings of the atomic states which cannot be resolved by classical spectroscopy. This is due to the fact that the resolution is not determined by the Doppler width but by the natural line width. On the other hand: Because the level crossing method does not involve the Doppler width it cannot be applied to the investigation of isotope shifts which play an important part in precission measurements of optical line structures, nor can it be used to study effects which influence the Doppler shape. So the range of application of the two methods — level crossing and high resolution optical spectroscopy — is clearly defined and it is evident that both should be improved and perfectioned.
