Quantum-Beats and Laser Excitation in Fast-Beam Spectroscopy

Abstract

When Prof. Bashkin presented his paper in 1970 on “Recent Advances of Beam-Foil Spectroscopy” at the Atomic Physics Conference in Oxford1; he included as one of the advances the measurements of periodic intensity variations in the decay of hydrogen-like atoms (H, He+) exposed to external electric fields. Although this phenomenon had been observed in 1965 for the first time2 by beam foil spectroscopy3 (BFS) it was only by 1969/70 that this phenomenon was understood as just one possible example of the interference occuring when the time-resolved decay of close-lying levels is observed after pulsed excitation4.
