Abstract

In this section we outline the thermodynamic theory which is employed in extracting coefficients relating to solvation from measured quantities. The points which are emphasized are the role of extrathermodynamic equations for the concentration dependence of thermodynamic functions, the arbitrary nature of standard states, and the additional complication encountered in passing from the study of solvation in solutions of non-electrolytes to solvation in ionic solutions.
