The subject of this volume is of great significance to the development of new plant types of superior merit, and thus has tremendous potentialities to reinvigorate and modernize agriculture and the way of life in the less developed countries of the world. People have been conscious of persistent diversity in biological populations and through the ages have exploited it to evolve more productive types of plants and animals. These crop plants and animals are probably still the best under conditions of minimum care, but this kind of starvation culture has no place in today’s world, which is faced with a terrific population-growth pressure and a precarious imbalance between supply and demand. The days of a static agriculture are gone, and our farmer is no longer content with the pursuit of agriculture as a merely subsistence-oriented family occupation.
