Nutritional Problems in the Labor Force and Their Relation to Economic Development

Abstract

When nutritionists propose a program to improve the health or nutritional status of a population, then economists and planners may ask what the economic benefits of such a program are likely to be. Health is a high human value but one that is difficult to measure in monetary units. One obvious area in which economists and nutritionists have seen a link between nutrition and economic development is that of labor productivity. If poor nutrition is lowering productivity, then an investment in programs to improve nutritional status of workers can be justified on economic grounds alone.
