Social and Economic Orientation of Crop Improvement: An Approach to Maize Breeding

It is common to consider Mexico the cradle of the “green revolution.” It is not so commonly realized that many Mexicans have not received the green revolution’s benefits. Wheat bread, for example, is not yet part of many peasant diets. While Fig. 1 shows that agronomists have improved the wheat crop through breeding and proper cultural practices, the plant breeder should maintain goals that agree with the social and economic reality of the people he is working for. In the case of Mexico, a great percentage of our peasants still practice subsistence agriculture.
