Solanum tuberosum X S. andigena Hybrids and Their Importance in Potato Breeding

After a brief review of the pertinent literature, this chapter provides examples of hybrid varieties of the potato derived in Colombia after crossing clones of Solanum tuberosum with clones of S. andigena obtained from several countries. The varieties display hybrid vigor that is expressed in high yield and greater disease resistance, frost tolerance, and uniformity, and in other attributes. The vigor remains relatively high after one generation of selfing of the hybrids. The vigor is accounted for on the basis of gene complementation or interaction of combinations of genes selected under quite different environmental conditions. The chromosome duplication of these hybrids (2n = 96) appears promising as a basis for further improvement of certain clones, but the effects of chromosome doubling are still under evaluation.
