Water pollution has been with us for a long time; men have been aware of its presence and have described it in general terms. As their knowledge of biology and chemistry advanced they applied those sciences to its measurement. Aside from limited measurements of drinking water supplies, however, it is only for the past 40 years that water quality data have been collected systematically on water bodies, and only for 15–20 years that data have been collected for a large number of locations. Limnologic measurements of water quality were virtually unknown 15 years ago.
