Abstract

An understanding of how maternal metabolic and endocrine disturbances alter embryonic and fetal development requires a knowledge of the control systems that exist in the mother and in the fetus and how these interact with each other. Physiologic and metabolic conditions in the perinatal period are excluded and emphasis is placed on the first half of gestation. Each topic to be covered will be introduced by a brief discussion of existing information on fetal function, the interrelation between maternal and fetal system, and clinical and experimental observations.
