The present trends in research on luminescence are discussed with regard to unusual materials, recent phenomena and applications. The principal emphasis appears to be on cooperative effects at high intensities of excitation. Complex associated defects are increasingly investigated. Luminescent properties of magnetic materials and of amorphous substances are being studied. In general, the research is becoming more sophisticated, both in concepts and techniques, but is also becoming more applied.
