Programs on Large Scale Applications of Superconductivity in Japan

Abstract

The following notes give a short survey of the present, large scale application of superconductivity in Japan. Since in many aspects, research and development have taken a different way in Japan compared with other countries, we thought it necessary to begin with a short historical account of the progress (Section 2). Section 3 gives a review of the present state, where we have divided the major projects into the following lines: 1) MHD power generation systems, 2) superconducting rotating machines, 3) cryogenic power transmission systems, 4) magnetically levitated transportation, and 5) application for high energy physics. Programs on basic superconductivity science, superconducting materials and refrigeration systems are not included. This survey covers data up to August 1973. A tabulated version can be found at the end of these notes.
