Cellular Recognition in Slime Molds: Evidence for its Mediation by Cell Surface Species-Specific Lectins and Complementary Oligosaccharides

Abstract

Specific cellular recognition must be mediated by quantitative or qualitative properties of the surfaces of the interacting cells. Determination of the molecular basis of cellular recognition may prove difficult in complex metazoan organisms that contain many cell types and highly specific forms of cellular association. For this reason, a simple eukaryotic cell type, like the cellular slime mold, is a preferable starting point for an analysis of the molecular basis of cellular recognition.
