The general principles governing the molecular organization of membranes have become clarified in recent years, and we are in the midst of a period when increasingly detailed experimental information about the structures of membranes and their molecular constituents is being obtained at an explosive rate. This structural information must be relevant to an understanding of membrane functions, and in this paper, we attempt briefly to show how these structural insights may illuminate some aspects of the two main problem areas that are the foci of this symposium: ligand-receptor and cell-cell interactions.
