Abstract

We started this study several years ago, because knowledge of molecular biology of a bacterial genus was very fragmentary. A number of questions needed an answer such as: What are the relationships (homology) between the genomes of the individual strains in a genus ? how homogeneous or heterogeneous are the molecular weights and base compositions of the genome DNA ? is a bacteriological species a genetically homogeneous group of strains ? what are the correlations between the genotypic and the phenotypic properties of the strains ? etc.
