Genetic Control of D-Amino Acid Metabolism in Gram-Negative Bacteria

Abstract

We have previously shown that mutations dhuA which increase histidine transport enable his auxotrophs of Salmonella typhimurium to utilize D-histidine. Oxender has demonstrated that other mutations in Escherichia coli increase leucine transport and enable leu auxotrophs to grow on D-leucine. On the other hand, no mutation is required for met mutants of either S. typhimurium or E. coli to use D-methionine as an L-methionine substitute.
