Use of Molecular Sieving on Agarose Gels to Study DNA Uptake by Chlamy-Domonas Reinhardi

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((NSSA,volume 3))

Abstract

All the studies so far reported on the uptake and expression of exogenous DNA in plants have involved the use of whole higher plants (1–6), callus tissue cultures (7), isolated cells (4,5,8,9) or protoplasts (10–12). Owing to the limitation of our knowledge of these genetic systems and owing to the enormous complexity of higher plants (13,14), one realizes that the study of foreign DNA uptake and particularly its subsequent expression — if any — in plant systems is extremely difficult.
