The Mechanism of Competence for DNA Uptake and Transformation in Pneumococci

In the introduction of this paper one should first of all provide some justification for discussing topics in bacterial physiology at a meeting like this, concerned mainly with higher plants. The reason for discussing an aspect of bacterial transformation is that in bacteria considerable amount of information is available about the mechanism of DNA uptake in phenomena leading to genetic change and a brief review of this topic in pneumococci could illustrate with a case history the kinds of ideas, experimental approaches and observations one encounters when working with such a problem.
