Hydrocarbon Gas (Methane) in Canned Deep Sea Drilling Project Core Samples

Abstract

There were wide variations in the amounts of gas retained by Deep Sea Drilling Project cores at the time they were brought to the deck of the Glomar Challenger. To date, about 60 samples from 12 different sites, sealed in metal cans, have been analyzed for quantities and composition of gases. The quantities of gas varied from background, a few tens of parts per million by volume, to over 215,000 ppm by volume; virtually all the gas was methane. While the measured quantities are below those that could be dissolved in the pore water of the sediments, some of these values are very large when the time (i.e., for gas to escape in response to reduced pressures) between their removal from the subsea environment and their being sealed into the cans is considered.
