Experiments on Hydrocarbon Gas Hydrates in Unconsolidated Sand

Abstract

Experiments were carried out to observe the formation and decomposition of hydrocarbon gas hydrates in an unconsolidated sand pack 4.4 cm in diameter and 45.7 cm long. Pressure and temperature ranges were 37 to 43 bars and 5 to 10°C; gas used was 90% methane and 10% ethane. Different procedures were followed, all of which were successful to some extent in making hydrate. Of the saturation range studied, lower initial water content generally resulted in more hydrate. Decomposition and gas production were carried out at constant pressure or constant temperature. In the constant pressure (rising temperature) method, decomposition started when the sand pack temperature reached the hydrate formation temperature for methane, and continued until ethane hydrate formation temperature was reached.
