In optical emission spectrography, the measurement of photographic response is usually made with the aid of a line scanning microphotometer. Many of the older nonrecording instruments use an optically projected galvanometer or microammeter scale as a readout device. Another readout system in use is a servo-balancing potentiometer coupled to a mechanical counter. Both these systems are electromechanical in nature and certain component parts are subject to wear, which can show up as a decrease in the slope of the emulsion calibration curve over a period of time.
