Abstract

In 1932, Willmer and Kendal wrote:

The future of tissue culture as an experimental method depends very largely upon whether a more complete knowledge can be obtained of the requirements of the cells. The goal at which to aim is a completely synthetic medium whose every constituent is under control.1
