Immunoglobulins

Abstract

Immunglobulins are a class of structurally related proteins containing antibodies, certain fragments of antibodies, and certain pathological proteins. The earlier, synonymous “γ-globulins” has been largely superseded because it is sometimes not clear whether it refers to a class of structurally related proteins or to an electrophoretic class. The suffix globulin arose from a classification of proteins based upon solubility which is now irrelevant. Within the immunoglobulin class the nomenclature tends to follow recommendations made from time to time by W.H.O. Committees.1
