Adrenal Steroids, Membranes and Neoplasia

Abstract

Neoplastic cells show qualitative differences from normal cells in their overall patterns of gene expression (1); in particular, malignant transformation has been shown to involve a number of structural and functional alterations in the cell membrane (2–8). The plasma membrane may play a vital role in the regulation of cell division by affecting the transport of essential nutrients into the cell, and by acting as the transmitter and transducer of signals arising from cell-cell interactions. Uncontrolled growth could result from abnormalities in transport regulation, or in aberrant sensitivity to external signals which normally regulate cell division (2,8).
