Abstract

A gonadotropin-releasing hormone became available for clinical studies in 1971, when Schally and associates isolated, determined the structure and synthesized LH releasing hormone (LH-RH). It was hoped that this new hypothalamic hormone, among other things, would prove to be useful in the diagnosis and therapy of disorders of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis. The diagnostic value of the LH-RH test has recently been questioned by Mortimer et al. (1973) who reported that it was not possible to distinguish between hypothalamic and pituitary causes of hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. However, the possibility of using LH-RH in the treatment of infertility in men and women is of great interest and the potential therapeutic role of LH-RH has to be thoroughly explored.
