Elucidation of the structure of the first hypophysiotropic hormone, TRH, from porcine (Bøler et al., 1969) and ovine (Burgus et al., 1969) hypothalami opened a new era in the field of neuro-endocrinology. This achievement vas soon followed “by the isolation of LH-RH, the neurohormone which stimulates the release of “both LH and FSH (Matsuo et al., 1971; Burgus et al., 1971). More recently, the tetradecapeptide H-Ala-Gly-Cys-Lys-Asn-Phe-Phe-Trp-Lys-Thr-Phe-Thr-Ser-Cys-OH has been isolated from ovine and porcine hypothalami (Brazeau et al., 1973; Schally et al., 1975) on the basis of its ability to inhibit GH release and called somatostatin or GH-RIH.
