Preliminary observations reported at meetings held in 1972 (1, 2) indicated the existence of at least two classes of androgen binding proteins (ABP) in seminiferous tubules and in extracts from tubules isolated from testes of recently hypophysectomized rats. We observed that most of the androgen binding protein activity in testis was associated with the extracellular fractions, presumably in tubular fluid (2). We were somewhat disconcerted by the low values in germinal cells, since our initial motivation for performing these experiments was based upon hopes that we might identify those germinal cells which were potentially responsive to androgens by determining which cells contained the high affinity ABP.
